In-House and Outside Counsel: Strategies for Creating a Collaborative and Trusting Working Relationship

Although in-house and outside counsel share common service goals, their roles at their respective organizations have specific priorities and focuses. In-house counsel are often tasked with managing operational compliance and legal risks, as well as strategically advising C-suite executives, with a continued focus on being cost-effective by minimizing external legal expenses. On the other hand, outside counsel collaborate with their in-house counsel counterparts in effectively navigating through thorny issues, as well as handle matters within a specific niche or specialization. Additionally, outside counsel often provide valuable legal updates or trainings. This dynamic session will feature in-house and outside counsel panelists that have tried and true recommendations illustrating how in-house and outside counsel can best build and maintain a productive, collaborative and cost-efficient relationship.

Influencers and Brand Promotion

Social media influencers occupy an ever-increasing role in the marketing and promotion of consumer products. Consumer brands often partner with influencers to increase the visibility of their products, and influencers seek status, money, and visibility—all while preserving their authenticity. Social media companies also play a critically important role by providing the platforms on which influencers broadcast their content to their followers. This CLE presentation will address the unique intellectual property issues, considerations, and challenges that are at play, and the pitfalls to look out for when negotiating for sponsored content in order to effectively promote a brand on social media platforms.

Doing More with Less: Generating Value from Existing Corporate Assets in Today’s Post-Pandemic Workplace

This panel discussion will focus on innovative ways corporate legal teams can positively impact the company’s bottom line through creative deal-making on existing corporate assets.Three objectives:

  • Lease less: Reduce the space you lease in connection with hybrid and partial return-to-office arrangements

  • Own less: Convert real estate assets from a cost to a profit center through innovative financial    arrangements such as sale-leaseback transactions (company sells an asset and then immediately leases it from the buyer to retain asset but also access capital)

  • Sublease more: Generate revenue or save money by subleasing space, whether as a sublandlord or a subtenant

Building Your Privacy Toolbox

The role of in-house counsel is challenging enough without trying to stay up to speed on the avalanche of new privacy laws and their impacts on your company’s business.  Whether understanding what constitutes sufficient employee consent for your new biometric-enabled time clocks, which privacy laws are triggered by your marketing department’s latest customer engagement effort, or simply trying to get your acronyms straight (i.e. GDPR, CCPA, BIPA, DPA, SCC), privacy can be a daunting challenge.  In this session, Scot Ganow, a partner at Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP and a former chief privacy officer, will provide:

  • An update on the current privacy regulatory and risk landscape;

  • A discussion on universal best practices for sound data governance; and

  • A practical set of tools to complement your current practices to address both compliance and risk management, as well as ways to potentially leverage your company’s data in a more efficient and strategic manner.
